A 65-year old Filipino immigrant crumpled to the sidewalk near Times Square in New York City when a man suddenly and brutally kicked her stomach. After the woman fell, the man also kicked her head several times.

A security camera from the lobby of a luxury apartment building caught the violent actions. There were security guards. Three of them in the lobby. At first glance of the video, one security guard walked to the entrace looking at the Filipino woman. But he closed the doors of the building, and the three of them watched.

On Monday in New York City, the Police Department released the video and caused another wave of fear for many Asian-Americans already worn down by a steady drumbeat of assaults.

The video went viral, and the attack provoked condemnations from public officials and seemed to underscore the difficulty—the government faces in trying to decrease unprovoked assaults against Asian-Americans.

The City Mayor of New York, Mayor Bill de Blasio, called the attack “absolutely disgusting and outrageous” and urged New Yorkers to intervene when they see or witness assaults.

In the United States, reports of anti-Asian hate crimes have escalated in recent weeks. The actions caught in this video released by the N.Y.P.D. is the latest in a series of those crimes.

Warning: the video shows a brutal attack to a Filipino woman.

The actions of three security guards may have proven that even if you're attacked in broad daylight, you might have to fend for yourself.

U.S. President Joe Biden announced new initiatives to combat anti-Asian prejudice, including publishing more frequent data on hate crime incidents and taking steps to encourage people to report them.

As of writing, the man who blatantly attacked Vilma Kari, the Filipino immigrant, had not been arrested.

The N.Y.P.D. also announced that it would begin deploying undercover officers to neighborhoods with large Asian populations to respond to attacks. The police also said that all unprovoked attacks on people of Asian descent will now be referred for investigation as possible hate crimes.
